Celebrating the Success of Our Eat Well to Stay Well Project at Somerset Bridge School

Updated: Mar 24

"Please can I have more fish! That was so delicious! I never knew fish was so nice."
"I have never tasted pomegranates or cranberries before, but they were really nice."
"I didn’t know it was so easy to make bread—just a few ingredients mixed together, and it tasted delicious! Much nicer than the shop-bought bread with preservatives."
"My daughter absolutely loved the tasting session. We have continued at home, and she has filled in the whole Eat Well plate!"

These are just a few of the wonderful responses from parents and children at Somerset Bridge School, where we recently completed 14 healthy eating workshops as part of our Eat Well to Stay Well project.

Throughout the program, over 400 children and many parents participated, exploring the importance of nutrition for both physical and mental well-being.

What Did the Children Learn?

During the workshops, children learned about different food groups and had the chance to taste a variety of nutritious foods, including:

  • Fresh vegetables

  • A range of fruits (including some they had never tried before!)

  • Different grains

  • Beans & pulses

  • Fish & lean meats

  • Natural yoghurt

The children took a copy of the Eatwell Plate home. It was great to receive emails from families who had continued to add more foods to their Eatwell Plates. Eating a diverse range of different plants is very important for supporting a wide variety of beneficial microbes in the gut, which in turn impacts both physical and mental health. Parents were also invited to an online course, where they could learn more about healthy eating from the comfort of their own home.

A Lasting Impact

This project has been a fantastic experience, helping children and parents develop a positive relationship with food and understand the role of nutrition in their daily lives. By making healthy eating fun, accessible, and engaging, we hope these lessons will leave a lasting impact on our community.

A huge thank you to the Hinkley Point Community Fund for supporting this initiative! Together, we can inspire healthier choices for a brighter future.

If you want to stay well – eat well!
