Outdoor Family Fun: Cooking and Adventure at Lower Lakes

Updated: Sep 24

This summer, we took outdoor family fun to the next level with a fantastic day of cooking, activity, and exploration at Lower Lakes, just outside Bridgwater. Partnering with Xcelerate and Black Rock Outdoors, we delivered an exciting program as part of the Happy Healthy Holiday Playscheme that had families coming together for a memorable experience.

Cooking Up Fun in the Great Outdoors

One of the highlights of our day was the opportunity to cook outdoors. Families gathered around the firepit, where they learned the essential skill of making a fire safely. The children were fascinated as they watched the instructors demonstrate the techniques for starting a fire and ensuring it burned brightly and safely.

Once the fire was roaring, it was time to make popcorn! The scent of kernels popping over the flames filled the air, creating an atmosphere of excitement. It was a delightful way to engage everyone, and the joy on their faces as they enjoyed the freshly popped popcorn was priceless!

In addition to popcorn, families had the chance to make fresh coleslaw, backed potatoes, beans and bacon. Using crunchy, flavourful fresh vegetables, this hands-on activity not only emphasized the importance of healthy eating but also encouraged everyone to get involved. Parents and kids alike chopped, mixed, and shared tips on how to make their coleslaw unique.

Emphasizing Healthy Eating and Activity

Throughout the day, we focused on the significance of healthy eating and being active.

Cooking outdoors allowed families to appreciate fresh ingredients and understand how they can create nutritious meals together. Discussions about healthy eating sparked enthusiasm, with parents and children sharing their favourite fruits and veggies.

Alongside the cooking activities, we encouraged families to stay active. Kayaking is a thrilling option, and many families took to the water, paddling around the serene lake while enjoying the beautiful scenery. It was wonderful to see children being brave and trying something new, stepping outside their comfort zones and embracing the adventure of kayaking.

Creating Lasting Memories

The combination of cooking, outdoor exploration, and physical activity made for a truly unforgettable day. Families bonded over shared experiences, learned new skills, and created lasting memories. It was heart-warming to see parents and children laughing, chatting, and enjoying each other’s company in such a beautiful setting.

A Special Thanks

A big thank you to Xcelerate and Black Rock Outdoors for collaborating with us to make four successful outdoor learning events this summer!

These events would not have been possible without the funding from SASP through the Happy, Healthy, Holiday Playscheme and funding from Hinkley Point C to run healthy eating sessions for families in Bridgwater. We are excited that these events have inspired a passion for healthy eating, and families have already signed up for the next six-week course funded by Hinkley Point C. The course is run online, and participants will receive help and inspiration to make positive changes to their eating habits, improving both physical and mental health.

Thank you to all the families who participated! We can’t wait to see you at our next outdoor adventure—happy cooking and exploring!
