There's something truly magical about the aroma of fresh ingredients mingling together, laughter echoing through the air, and families bonding over the joy of cooking. This summer holiday at the Recreation centre, we experienced just that during our family cooking event, generously funded by the Happy Healthy Holiday Playscheme.
A Huge Success!
We were thrilled to see such an enthusiastic response from the community! Our 100 spots for the family cooking sessions were snatched up within hours of going live. It’s heart-warming to witness families eager to come together and create something special. From parents and grandparents to children of all ages, the excitement was palpable as families arrived, ready to roll up their sleeves and get cooking.
A Feast of Activities
The event was not just about cooking; it was a delightful mix of learning, sharing, and creativity. Families enjoyed preparing a variety of healthy meals, from fragrant tikka masala served with homemade focaccia to delicious homemade pizzas and fresh fish dishes. Each family received recipes and ingredients to take home, encouraging them to continue their culinary adventures together.
It was especially rewarding to hear from families who attended our Easter holiday cooking club. Many shared that they had continued making some of the dishes at home, creating a lasting impact on their family meals.
Inspiring New Tastes
One little girl joyfully exclaimed, “I have never tasted fish before, and I like it!” This sentiment was echoed by a mother whose autistic son, who is a very fussy eater, was pleased to try the fresh fish for the first time. These moments are what we strive for—encouraging families to explore new foods and flavours.
Including fish in your family’s diet is a fantastic way to boost nutrition. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish supports brain health, improves mood, and contributes to overall physical well-being. We’re excited to inspire families to incorporate more fish into their weekly meals!
Building Bonds Through Cooking
Cooking together is more than just about making food; it’s a wonderful opportunity for families to bond and create lasting memories. As children measured ingredients, stirred sauces, and decorated their plates, parents shared stories from their own childhoods, igniting a sense of nostalgia and connection.
Participants left not only with full bellies but also with newfound skills and ideas for cooking together at home. The smiles on the faces of both kids and adults were a testament to the joy that comes from shared experiences in the kitchen.
Gratitude for Our Supporters
A big thank you to SASP for providing funding for healthy cooking initiatives aimed at children on benefit-related free school meals, as well as those receiving booking codes from schools.
We’re also grateful to Hinkley Point C for supporting our efforts to involve parents in healthy cooking practices. This collaboration enables us to invite families to join a longer online course focused on the benefits of healthy food for improving both physical and mental health.
Your support has allowed us to create a space where families can come together, learn, and celebrate the joy of cooking. We’re so grateful for the opportunity to foster community connections and promote healthy eating habits through fun and interactive cooking experiences.
What’s Next?
If you missed out on this event, don’t worry! We’re already planning more family cooking sessions in the coming months. Stay tuned for announcements on upcoming workshops, where we’ll explore new recipes and cuisines. It’s a fantastic opportunity for families to continue their culinary adventures together!
In the meantime, we encourage families to bring the spirit of our cooking event home. Gather in the kitchen, experiment with new recipes, and most importantly, enjoy each other’s company. After all, the best ingredient in any dish is the love shared among family.
Happy cooking, everyone! We can’t wait to see you at our next event!
