Walked into Better Health

One of the participants in our recent 5K community fun run was Gilli, a remarkable woman who joined the event alongside her extended family — including children, in-laws, and grandchildren. Gilli was keeping pace with — and even outpacing — many younger participants. She ended up winning the over-60 age group, which tells us something incredible: she's over 70 and still going strong!

Want to know Gilli’s secret to staying young, fit, and healthy? She shared her inspiring story about how she quite literally walked herself into better health.

Gilli explained that although she had always tried to eat well and maintain a healthy weight, a few years ago she was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Despite her healthy lifestyle, her blood sugar levels were dangerously high. Her doctor gave her a clear warning: continue down this path, and she could develop full-blown diabetes — a condition that carries increased risks of heart disease, nerve damage, and other serious complications.

Gilli knew something had to change. Since her diet was already good, she focused on the one missing piece: regular physical activity. She committed to walking every day for eight weeks. When she returned to the doctor for a follow-up, her blood sugar levels had dropped back into the normal range.

That moment was a turning point. Gilli realized just how powerful physical activity can be. Since then, walking has become part of her daily routine — and it shows. Her energy, spirit, and commitment are a true inspiration to everyone around her.

Thank you, Gilli, for taking part in our 5K community fun run and Easter holiday walking challenge — and for being a shining example to the younger members of our community. Your story proves that it's never too late to make positive changes — and that sometimes, a simple walk can change everything.
