Remission From Type 2 Diabetes Through Lifestyle Changes: Tony’s Inspiring Story

Tony was one of the enthusiastic guests who joined us at The Canalside for our Healthy Before-Christmas Lunch on Sunday. The tables were filled with nourishing foods: chicken legs, broccoli salad, homemade bread, a vegetable Christmas tree, Greek-style yoghurt, seeds, and fresh fruit.

This is exactly the kind of food Tony wants to eat — fresh, natural meals instead of ultra-processed foods and excess sugar.

Tony has already taken part in both our Walking Project and Healthy Eating Course earlier this year, yet he didn’t hesitate to sign up again for our January programme. With a big smile he told us:

“I need to keep going. We need to have a healthy lifestyle. Changing my lifestyle has changed my life. Without these changes, I would now have full-blown diabetes. But with positive changes to my diet, and by walking every day, both my physical and mental health have improved.”

A Wake-Up Call

A few years ago, Tony had a blood test which indicated he was developing Type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, he ignored both the blood test results and his symptoms, and he eventually received a formal diagnosis of diabetes.

“That was the moment I woke up,” Tony says. “It was time for lifestyle changes.”

Morning Walks That Changed His Day — and His Mood

Tony began walking every morning after learning about the importance of early daylight exposure for mental health and the importance of physical activity for both physical and mental wellbeing. Research consistently shows that people who get natural morning light experience better sleep, lower rates of depression, and fewer symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Walking is also one of the most effective and proven activities for improving blood sugar control.

Tony has noticed the difference himself:

“My early morning walk makes my whole day better, both physically and mentally.”

Transforming His Diet

Next, Tony made positive changes to the way he eats. He reduced sugar and cut down on starchy foods, focusing instead on balanced meals with:

  • Fresh, natural proteins such as chicken and fish

  • Plenty of vegetables

  • A small amount of good-quality starchy foods — like his own homemade bread or Weetabix (but not modern ultra-processed sugary cereals)

Tony explains: “When I eat fresh and natural food, I don’t need to eat as much. I feel satisfied — something I do not feel when I eat ultra-processed food or lots of sugar.”

The results have been remarkable. He has lost weight naturally — enough that he has had to have his trousers taken in by several inches!

Diabetes in Remission

Most importantly, Tony’s latest blood tests show that his Type 2 diabetes is now in remission.

He feels better, his blood work confirms it, and his story is a powerful reminder:

Lifestyle changes matter. They truly can transform your life.
