It was fantastic to team up with Xcelerate this summer and offer a mix of outdoor cooking and kayaking sessions for teenagers. What surprised and delighted us most was discovering just how many teenage boys and girls genuinely love to cook. Once they got hands-on with the ingredients, their creativity really came alive.
With our portable ovens and lightweight outdoor kitchen equipment, we were able to set up cooking stations anywhere — including by the lakeside. And the weather couldn’t have been better! Weeks of sunshine meant that outdoor cooking became the perfect activity, and the young people absolutely embraced it.
They prepared fresh, simple meals, learned new skills, and gained confidence while having fun in nature. The teamwork, laughter, and enthusiasm were brilliant to watch.
Everyone took home the Eat Well Plate and continued the Eat Well competition at home, along with new recipes and increased confidence.
Alongside the cooking, the groups also took part in kayaking sessions, which added a brilliant sense of adventure. Many of them were trying kayaking for the first time, and it was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they learned to paddle, balance, and explore the water together.
Overall, it was an inspiring summer filled with sunshine, new skills, good food, and outdoor adventure. We can’t wait to do more of this!
Thank you so much to the Hinkley Point Community Fund and SASP for funding our summer holiday cooking and activity sessions.
